Week 4 - Australian Government

Now that we have a concrete understanding of the federation of Australia (and definitely what FEDERATION means) we can begin to move on to learning about the 3 different levels of Australian Government.

These levels are: 

• Federal
• State
• Local

Today you will begin 2 activities. One is to be done during class with a partner, the other is to be done at home which will require further research.

1. With a partner, list as many responsibilities as you can which fall under each tier (level) of government. For example, a responsibility would be something like Health Care, Education, Defense etc.
2. At home and on your own, choose one responsibility for either federal, state and local government. Then design a flow chart, poster, blog, website or video explaining how this level of government takes responsibility for this. 

• Who are the people responsible for carrying out tasks
• Who creates these laws
• How do these laws/rules affect the population

Week 1 - Lesson 2

Today you must visit the following website and read the arguments for and against the federation of Australia http://www.civicsandcitizenship.edu.au/cce/federation_fast_facts,9276.html

You will need to write down IN YOUR OWN WORDS 3 of the arguments for and 3 of the arguments against federation. Please read the information on the page first. The arguments are lower down the page.

Next - design a poster that will try to persuade people either FOR or AGAINST federation. You can create this digitally or by drawing it on a piece of blank paper. Your poster must try to persuade people, so using persuasive language would be key (think back to our English lessons).

You will only one lesson to complete this activity. Working individually, not in pairs.

Blogging Activity

TASK: You have just started a new job working for a trip advising website named Advise My Trip.com. On your first day, your editor has asked you to write an article about visiting the U.A.E. Because you lived in Sharjah for many years, your editor has asked you to do this. They would like you to write an article that briefly discusses the history of the U.A.E, where to visit, how to prepare for a trip, and any other information that people would need.

Requirements: 

• Write briefly about the history of the U.A.E (unification, Sheikh Zayed, discovery of oil)
• List at least one landmark worth visiting in each of the Emirates
• What hotels to stay at (at least 3)
• Restaurants to eat at (at least 5)
• Local customs and traditions
• Any other information that would be vital to a tourist (local etiquette, currency, how long travel takes from the following major cities: London, Paris, New York, Rome, Beijing, Moscow, Tokyo, Sydney, Buenos Aires, Los Angeles, Johannesburg)

As the site's readers have been requesting information on the U.A.E for quite some time, and you are the most qualified to write about it, your editor wants a very accurate and detailed article. You may use other websites and sources in order to gain this information.

Your article must be at least 300 words in total.

You may use photos as well.

REMEMBER: Any inappropriate comments, or comments that are deemed a waste of time will be reported immediately to both your parents and Mr Jason. You have been warned! Your task today is to form an organisation with two other class members. The organisation could be a football or netball club, or some other kind of association. You will need to develop a constitution (set of laws) that your organisation must follow. You need to have exactly 10 laws.

Building a Nation

So far in History we have looked at:

• How to research about the past
• How to take notes and organise them
• The history of the Unification of the United Arab Emirates
• The Sheikhs 

Your task today...

With a partner, you are going to create a poster based on one aspect of Unification and of the Sheikhs. Each class member will be paired up and will be designated what their poster is to be about. 

Steps:

1. Begin researching your topic. Your first destination should be Britannic Online via the Moodle page. 
2. When you take notes, make sure you are finding information relevant ONLY to your topic.
3. Begin designing your poster. Once you have all the information you need.
4. Find at least one image to place on your poster - Mr Simon will print it out for you and glue it on later today. Make sure you leave some space for it!

Once completed, your posters will go to the back of the room on the wall under BUILDING A NATION.
